Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.
On one hand Zack Snyder’s 300 is a dumb, super-cheesy macho-man’s flick, chock full of immaculately sculpted torsos, arterial spillage and battlefield grunting, but on another, the super-stylized blue-screened visuals are so extreme and surreal, it qualifies as an intoxicating example of the kind of digital-age filmmaking that modern cinema is increasingly inching towards. Joining Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City as an aesthetically faithful film adaptation of graphic novelist Frank Miller’s work, this fictionalised account of the Battle of Thermoplyae certainly blows away Troy in the swords-and-sandals department, delivering one blood-and-severed-limb-strewn skirmish after another with impressive, eye-popping gusto. And it looks like some heady cross-pollination of The Cell, The Fountain and The Holy Mountain to boot. The performances are largely one-dimensional, and the writing often not more than functional, but Gerard Butler’s commanding performance as King Leonidas holds the pic together well enough. Don’t watch this for historical accuracy, 300 is sound-and-fury at its most viscerally satisfying.
This movie I saw on the "big screen" and cant wait to see it again on DVD, it was absolutely brilliant, the portrayal of "300" was eloquently done, a must see!
Does what it says on the packet. Faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, fab choreography & AMAZING art direction. Disappointing female lead & grunting script are letdowns- could have been so much more intelligent. O well. Hey- hot guys.
NOW THAT'S WHAT WE CALL A MOVIE... STORY LINE, CINEMATOGRAPHY, DIRECTION, ACTION. MUST WATCH ON BLU RAY FOR THOSE AMAZING GRAPHICS. HAVE SEEN IT MULTIPLE TIMES AND CAN WATCH IT AGAIN 2 BIG THUMBS UP!!!
