Must-see Kiwi film making - beautifully shot, brilliantly acted (though I actually found Waititi a bit OTT), perfectly paced, and tells a human story with the right mix of humour and 'drama'. I guess... Read more
some people might find it tragic, but this just is how some people in NZ lived - and still live. I personally appreciated the way these lives were depicted without there being some big 'message'. (And personally, I think being stuck in a miners cottage in Ponsonby that you paid $750K for with no back yard and 10cms away from the neighbours on either side is a bit tragic too.)

Wonderfully understated humour with the right amount of pathos.
Well worth the effort to set some time aside to watch.

Humorous and good-mood movie. Child actors up to their task. 80's settings and atmospheres brought out brilliantly. Wonderful bonus before the end credits.

OK however .... a sad look at the bleak life available in some parts of the country, little education and nearly zero prospects without moving. Acting and filming very well done.

I'm actually slightly dissapointed with 'Boy'. A family comedy? Sure I laughed a few times, but its prob closer to a tragedy in most aspects. If your just looking for some laughs and not a drama to... Read more
go with it, perhaps 'Boy' isn't the best choice...Its still good though, just not the cult classic media painted it to be.

Great acting and well made film but this is definitely not a comedy. A depressing satire of the difficulties involved in surviving parents and poverty.
