I kid you not when I say Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a better disaster film than 2012. It’s shorter, faster, more imaginative. It has gigantic meatballs and burgers hurtling into the Earth like asteroids, tornadoes made out of swirling spaghetti, an avalanche of leftover food and evil roasted chickens that know kung fu. Beside the stellar offerings by Pixar, Miyazaki and Henry Selick, Cloudy is probably the most dizzyingly fun animated movie of the year, a raucous, upbeat adaptation of Rob Barrett’s childrens best-seller about a young inventor (Bill Hader) whose latest contraption turns his sleepy town into a culinary mecca. Jammed with energetic, impeccable voice-work (Bruce Campbell and Mr. T!), imaginatively surreal sequences (check out that Cronenbergian climax!) and the sort of zany, off-kilter humour you’d expect from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the guys behind the Clone High cartoon series.
