Panting ladies wanting a dose of the McConaughey they know and love from his various man-candy roles, will not be pleased. Not only is Woodruff a scumbag, he's a sickly, gaunt, bigoted, phlegm hocking... Read more scumbag. Yet his wit and charms shine through and ultimately, in his darkest hour enable him to become something greater than himself and greater than the disease he inflicted upon himself, by his own ignorance and arrogance. Thankfully, there's some genuine moments of poignant and heart warming comedy intravenously fed into this film; mostly provided by the outstanding friendship between Ron and his extraordinary partner in crime Rayon, played to absolute perfection by Jared Leto; in his return to acting after five years.
Confronting but like seeing a car crash you won't be able to turn away. Certainly got my attention for the full 117 minutes
Was a bit of a surprise package. I really enjoyed this movie. Much better than I expected. Not the usual role for McConaughey, this was about portraying a tough gritty character who is not any sort... Read more of eye candy.
Never the less it was played very realistically by McConaughey and it was clear he relished the opportunity to break out of the usual lightweight parts into something more edgy and raw.
This was surprising - we didn't know much about it until we started into it (best way to watch a movie I guess!). McConaughey has lot a shite ton of weight for this movie (20kg) and it shows in shows... Read more like True Detectives. Fascinating true story, and McConaughey greatly deserves his Best Actor nomination for this role. Leto is also excellent as a "queen" (and got down to 52kg at the lowest). One of the most surprisingly movies of this award round.
Fantastic movie, surprising, informative, strong performances especially Jared Leto.

Yes good to hear some of the history of the early AIDS scare. hard to remember back to the shocking death of Rock Hudson, those younger won't remember that newspaper article that this movie started... Read more with .. Aids in that era was thought ONLY happening to homosexuals and there was a very strong movement saying this was their just rewards. times have changed...
A strong lead performance from Matthew I can't spell his name. A worthy dramatisation that avoids the traps.
Definitely not what I had expected, and hard to know exactly where it was going at first. However this movie proved to be a fascinating and revelatory experience. Definitely worth watching.
Well done by MM! Others played their roles well. I had no idea what it was about when I put it in, but it definitely kept me interested throughout and reminded me of things in the mid-80s.......would recommend to most.
