When high-powered Los Angeles business executive Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) gets put on a "no fly" list in Atlanta just days before his pregnant wife's due date, he hitches a ride across the country with slacker Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis). As Peter desperately tries to get home, he must deal with Ethan's laid-back attitude, numerous delays and several mishaps in this road trip comedy.
Todd Phillips’ (ob)noxious bro-mantic road-tripper Due Date doesn’t only rehash John Hughes’ 1987 classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but in essence, also every film he’s made mining the evidently lucrative comedy gold that occurs when men behave very, very badly (Road Trip, Old School, The Hangover). One might believe the central pairing of Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis would produce some magic, but that promise quickly dissipates when you realise this thing feels like stopgap filler before The Hangover 2 comes out. You know the routine – the uptight suit (Downey) is matched with the shambling free-spirit (Galifianakis) who’s possibly gay (but labels be damned, audiences love cringing/squirming at homoerotic humour!), and personality friction ensues. The gags, ranging from an inappropriately public display of masturbation to the accidental consumption of human remains, are to say the least, desperate and tediously “outrageous”, obviously a product of its script-by-committee writing (FOUR writers and they still needed a cute pug!).
