This film, which was a huge bomb over the Christmas period in America, is actually a charming, politically charged film for 8 to 14 year olds. In fact, for a film made for young girls the film has some really relevant comments to make for this audience. I never expected themes including 'segregation and racism are wrong' in a film aimed for tweeners, but the film covers these issues well, without beating us over the head with positive racial ideas. It also goes directly against the grain of the most of the movies around with a very anti-money and power theme, which is great as so many films for this age group seem to really supporting ‘Cinderella’ type ideals, as in ‘sit around and wait for your Prince to whisk you off your feet’. The film also has a very witty design, and in some cases almost seems to be ‘Shrek 2’ come to life, with a medieval theme being imposed on modern contraptions. Even Minnie Driver does O.K. as the second rate witch who is looking out for Ella. Anne Hathaway is doing very well considering her whole career is based on her work in ‘The Princess Diaries’, but once again she proves she can carry a film by herself, and also that a young actress doesn’t have to be appearing in the tabloids to have a career. Good, clean solid entertainment for young men and women that has a good view of modern society.
