Heartbreaking and hilarious, Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale is an excellent wrap-up of Ricky Gervais’ winning follow-up series to The Office. Extra-turned-sitcom actor Andy Millman (Gervais) is now experiencing the stardom he’s always wanted– to the point where he has his own talking dolls – but he’s still unsatisfied: he wants the Hollywood leading man spotlight. Meanwhile, his friendship with buddy Maggie Jacobs (Ashley Jensen) – who remains the heart and humanity of the show – is drifting apart. A witty, well-acted study of the soul-whittling effects of fame and the age-old conundrum of celebrity-versus-integrity, this feature-length special is perhaps more overtly dramatic than what’s come before, but there are still a handful of funny moments, including an audition gone embarrassingly wrong in the best head-slapping Gervais fashion. Of course, there are the self-spoofing cameos, the standout being Clive Owen’s side-splittingly obnoxious appearance. The music is a bit syrupy in places, but overall a more-than-agreeable finish to a fantastic series.
