A gem from the Coen brothers. Full of quirky (weird!) characters and disastrous plot twists, it has magnificent cinematography and even makes you feel cold as you watch those winter scenes.

I loved the friendly accents in this movie, which made it a bit hard to appreciate the seriousness of the situation. However, the movie made a lot of sense and was highly watchable. Don't watch it with... Read more

Loved it. Had already seen it at the movies a few years ago but I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Superb acting and oozing black humour. I would hasen to add that it may not be for the... Read more
squemish as the violent bits are very realistic. (I look at my garden shredder in a whole new light now)The accompanying doco on the making of the movie is also well worth a watch.

This is the Coen brothers at their best. Nobody puts a foot wrong in this story (apparently true) which has sublime moments of comedy drama and the odd excellent shock. While Buscemi and Macy shine... Read more
in their respective roles as the kidnapper and the plotting husband it is Frances McDormand as the heavily pregnant and very crafty police chief who delivers a stunning performance which deservedly won her an Oscar. Filmakers at the top of their game.

GREAT movie. Very much black comedy. I took a friend who is a church Minister - she kept bursting out laughing and slapping her hand over her mouth and saying "I can't believe I'm laughing at that"!... Read more

Great movie. Third time I've watched it. It's violent but somehow funny, quirky and wonderfully eccentric at the same time. It's a must see.

A truly must watch black comedy.
A brilliantly quirky story, with every disastrous twist you can imagine. Masterfully filmed and well cast. An easy 5/5 from me.

So real - a classic thriller and yet a completely unusual film. If you love thrillers, like me, but get sick of the same plots/characters/settings then watch this for a truly refreshing experience.... Read more
Fantastic character development, great plot, amazing scenery and a chance to 'see' an area of the US rarely shown in films....Minnesota.... the accents ...the way they deal with things...and of course the soundtrack. All the ingredients of a awesome movie. It was the 1st Coen bros movie I saw (and by accident too) and I nearly walked out! It gets better with every viewing.....

Although it is many years since I first saw this movie, there is one role that stays fresh in my mind. Frances McDermond as the policewoman was unforgettable. She was delightful, quirky, funny, endearing... Read more
and clever. A memorable role. This film is different. It is hard to categorise (perhaps better not to try but just to enjoy) because it incorporates black humour, a high body count, plenty of splatter and yet maintains a delightful innocence that is quite refreshing. I would watch it again and probably will.
