Leagues better than the insipid previous installment, and the best since Rob Cohen’s decade-old original, Fast and Furious 5 nevertheless doesn’t deviate too much from the franchise's devotion to the base pleasures of watching grunting, sweat-caked beefcakes burn rubber while impossibly hot-looking women hang off their biceps. Following an appropriately hair-raising train heist opening, the first two-thirds settle into routine team-assembling caper exposition, reacquainting us with wanted fugitives Paul Walker and Vin Diesel as they cook up a truly wacky, harebrained plan to rob a very rich, very powerful and VERY BAD guy named Reyes (Joaquim De Almeida) in Rio. It’s all enjoyable enough, especially with The Rock throw into the mix as an elite task force agent who goes mano-a-mano with Diesel. But it’s really the final 20 minutes that elevate what’s merely an OK action movie into an exhilarating work of utter blitzkrieg cartoon lunacy that’ll have your collective jaws hitting the asphalt in giddy awe.
