Unfortunately this wandering bloodfest lacks the impact of previous Scorsese movies. The script appears to almost accidentally follow the very loose and unstructured plot. Although there are subplots... Read more
, they seem to be left hanging out to dry. Leonardo DiCaprio, for once, has shown he can actually act. Not since Gilbert Grape has he shown his skill.
As for the unfortunate Irish accent put on by Cameron Diaz, say no more. She can act, but was out of her depth in this epic.
All in all, an overly long (typical Scorsese) movie that failed to convince the viewer of or even really expose it's real intent.
Not worth the effort to watch.

A masterpiece. Martin rates this as his life's work. A gripping look at the violent ideals that created a city whose ideals have so much influence over western civilisation.

Cameron Diaz acts well enough, but is wrong for this piece; Di Caprio is very good; but Daniel Day Lewis as "Bill the Butcher" walks away with the show in every scene he's in. Great feel, mad premise... Read more

I liked this movie. I found it different, decently long and it managed to keep my attention throughout. In my opinion Daniel Day-Lewis is great to watch in this movie and I think is the star in this one. Worth the watch.

was less an entertainment spectacle and more an open wound historic account of the bleakest behaviour by American/Irish immigrants. I grant that it was well acted, well filmed and probably well written,,, but then I wouldn't buy the book either.

I loved this movie. A exciting all the way through, with a great ending. On of Leonardo's best.

A real epic of a movie in everyway.
A little overblown in places - and plods under its own weight.
Bill the Butcher is such a great character, and so watchable, that you're bored when he's... Read more
not on screen. Great supporting cast - Diaz though, appears a little too clean and Hollywood.

This movie was action and bloodthirsty all the way. Its a wonder anyone survived. A really well produced movie with some great fight scenes and well acted by all the stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
