Richard Stanley’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick was trashed by critics when it came out but it’s become a fan favourite over the years. To be sure, the choppy script has few original ideas, cribbing from the likes of Demon Seed, The Terminator, Alien and Blade Runner, while the burnt-out wasteland backdrop doesn't look any different from countless of post-nuke films. But where it lacks in originality, it compensates with dollops of style, with Stanley mounting - particularly in the trippy second half - a nightmarish, borderline surreal vision that’s distinguished by its bleak tone and spectacular gore. Simon Boswell’s Ry Cooder-ish score adds a weird, twangy Americana feel to its futuristic setting that works wonders for atmosphere. Look out for offbeat, memorable character parts from William Hootkins as a peeping tom who delivers some truly filthy dialogue, Iggy Pop as a radio DJ voice, and Motorhead’s Lemmy as a cab driver.
