A film that divided critics on its release (some thought it was too tame and wanted to see more blood), I found this a brilliant, involving, moving portrayal of one of the more recent cases of genocide. Instead of focusing on the carnage that associated the murder of almost a million people, the film chooses to follow Paul Rusesabagina and his efforts to save people after the world has turned their collective back on the African nation, as they only help Africans when there is oil or natural resources to be had after the dust has settled. Don Cheadle who plays Paul, is an actor who has never really impressed me, but he pulls out all the stops, underplaying beautifully a part that a lesser actor could have filled with over dramatic clichés. He delivers a calm focused performance that for me, really conjures what it must have been like for the man to try to save family in the face of such out right hatred, and total apathy from the Western world. The breath-taking Sophie Okonedo also shines as Paul’s wife, Tatiana. She brings a truth and honesty to her role that easily outshines the best that Hollywood has to offer. One of the most moving films of the year without ever being manipulative, this is a must-see film for anyone with a heart, and any one with an interest in recent world events. Hire it NOW.
