It's been such a long time between this and the last Bond that I'd forgotten who Vesper was, and that made this film disjointed and it felt like a sequel. That's something none of the other bond movies... Read more
do and I think it's not a good thing. The action was filmed up so close that I couldn't apprieciate the full extent of the opening car chase and the Bond vs. Bad Guy action scenes were also so humanly impossible as to break the flow of an action sequence - which is quite a feat of filmaking. The soundtrack and opening credits have made a purposeful departure from the focus on Dancing Bond Girls and the style of vocals also doesn't match anything in the past. In fact if I wasn't mistaken there was more implied sexuality between Rene Mathis and Bond than between Bond and his only lay in the movie, Strawberry Fields - and we didn't even see them in bed together or a nude shot of her. She meets her end in a blantant hat-tip to Goldfinger, but it just looks like they did it as fans of the genre rather than creatively selecting reference to Bond's past. Bond never did get together with the main Bond girl of the film, Camille, he just presents her with a bungled kiss at the end. Something was rotten in this film. This is James Bond, without the Bond. Don't be surprised if in the next Bond episode they write in a homosexual encounter! Bond and M spent their time in a stupor of indecision and purposelessness and it shows in their manner within the script. I recommend viewing this film as a historical point of interest, possibly as the point where James Bond was finally emasculated by a ridiculously liberal Hollywood. If Daniel Craig has any sense, he'll retire himself from the role now. In the absence of Heath Ledger, the next Bond will likely be Tom Hanks.
