Dramatic re-run of well known and documented events.
A long movie, with lots of famous actors and critical events more the focus than character development.
Long and tedious, but the cast is marvelous as is the sad march of American history across the screen. It's all there: Eisenhouer the well meaning conservative, JFK shot down, Nixon the drunkard, Johnson... Read more the braggard, and Regan ruled by his right wing "kitchen cabnet". The Butler saw it all. No wonder he seemed perplexed in most scenes.
A great story but too long winded. Some excellent acting but i felt the leading actor lacked charisma. He spoke in a monotone that I found difficult to hear at times.
as others have said a bit long, a bit slow and for me a bit once over lightly Have recently watched The Help which dealt with the same topic much better.
I watched this in two sessions, and it did take a while to get round to the second half because it was a bit slow in the middle. I liked the way they juxtaposed the old and new worlds - deference, subservience... Read more and opulence on one side and challenge and civil rights on the other side. Based on a true story, and interesting overview of US history.
Very long but quite enjoyable true story about the life of a Butler who served under several Presidents. It was wonderful to see so many amazing actors make an appearance. I didn't really know much... Read more about Presidential history, so it was quite informative to watch. But I wouldn't know if it was accurate or not.
I watched this movie with no idea what it was really about and it was quite unexpected! I really liked the narrative of the movie, and the story being told from a parental view of a situation which... Read more ended up becoming the beginning of civil rights! The cast was fantastic and I had to watch till the very end. It is a bit long, but worth the watch.
We had mixed reviews on this movie ... My husband saw it before I did and said he just didn't get it ... On the other hand I loved it and watched it twice ... Yes it has the standard story improvements... Read more for a "true story" nevertheless for me it was a very interesting way to look at some of Americas history with some fabulous and very good acting from the cast particularly Oprah!
I felt they could have done more to replicate the presidents, the only one I recognised was Reagan, in this day and age, they could have done better. I had to guess which Pres we were up to. Loved Cuba though, good watch
