One of the films along with Bend It Like Beckham that has started a huge interest in Bollywood type entertainment, Monsoon Wedding is one of the best, with a deft mixing of Western styles with a strong Punjabi flavour. But no, there are no sudden incidents of bursting into song, even though music is a strong influence throughout the film. Along with love.

Following the last few days of preparations before a big wedding involving family from all around the world, the film follows 5 different stories of parents, children and grand children. It gives a view of how Indian culture has changed and how Western attitudes are affecting cultures that they used to be quite separate from.

While still covering plot points that we have seen before (the wedding couple having doubts), the film also looks at incest and family needs overriding personal concerns.

Beautifully filmed, the film brings an honesty and intensity to a cliché that has been done to death (the wedding). Also, although the film is subtitled don’t let that put you off, as this is a film that CAN BE ENJOYED BY ALL AGES, AND ALL CULTURES.
