Based on a series of Korean comics, Priest isn’t very good - it’s too derivative with its genre mish-mashing - but it’s endurable as silly pulp nonsense if you can adjust your mindset to view it as such. Barely 80 minutes long, the film is extremely light on plot, its vampires-vs-humans mythology set up quickly before it launches into its mix-master combo of The Searchers, The Road Warrior, Blade Runner, Alien, 1984, etc. Director Scott Stewart is an effects guy who previously made the also-Paul Bettany-starring and not-too-well-received Legion and it definitely shows his forte is still in the gimmicky 3D-geared visuals and slimy creature effects, not nuanced characters nor plotting. Bettany is deadly solemn throughout, except for when he’s forced to show a little levity by spouting corny one-liners. The wasted supporting cast includes Christopher Plummer and Alan Dale, both looking rather stiff as if wondering what the hell they’re doing in this pic (though you can always rely on Brad Dourif to liven things up a bit in another weirdo role).
