Let’s be clear: Gore Verbinski’s wild, all-over-the-map Rango, with its knowing spaghetti-western signatures, boldly surrealist digressions and largely ugly reptilian cast, isn’t going to entertain most tots out there. One minute aping Once Upon a Time in the West down to the creaking windmills and grandiose Morricone score, the next nodding to Hunter S. Thompson and Salvador Dali, and all the while functioning as some sort of rumination of The Self, Rango is content on singing to its own looney tune. Depp does a fantastic job of voicing the klutzy, titular chameleon who stumbles into the parched town of Dirt and inadvertently assumes the role of their sheriff. The ensuing Chinatown-like plot involving the control of water grinds a bit, and the overload of tangential ideas means a lot of jokes fall flat, but there’s always something to latch onto and gawk at, thanks to the absolutely stunning CG-animated wizardry by the folks at Industrial Light & Magic. From the game-changing attention paid to the filthy, decaying texture of the characters to dazzling action sequences such as the bat-riding rodent ambush, Rango is so positively jam-packed with one trippy eye-popper after another you’ll want to return for a second viewing – without the kids.
