...A Comedy About the Greatest Love Story Almost Never Told...
Shakespeare In Love is a romantic comedy for the 1990's set in the 1590's, telling the witty, sexy story behind the creation of the greatest love story of them all - Romeo and Juliet. Young Will Shakespeare is the up and coming playwright of the time, but has been disastrously struck by the bane of the writer's life - writer's block. What Will needs is a muse - and she appears in the form of the beautiful (and betrothed) Lady Viola. The path of true love doesn't run smooth for will, however - Viola is engaged to be married to the insufferable Lord Wessex (Colin Firth) at the command of Queen Elizabeth (Judi Dench). The joys and tragedy of his own life find their way onto the page in a moving, witty and spellbinding tale. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a brilliantly funny, warm and fast moving romance.

Shakespeare would be thrilled by it!! Well done
With better leads this could have succeeded. But the smug, talentless Paltrow & dorky Fiennes make my skin crawl & I just wanted to throw something at the screen after half an hour. Exhibit 1- the cover... Read more
shot just to the left over there. Shudder.TThere are two stories working together in this movie, smoothly interwoven throughout. One is about Shakespeare falling in love with a woman from high society, Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow). The... Read more
other story involves Shakespeare writing what is arguably the best love story ever written (Romeo and Juliet) drawing inspiration from his own romance with Viola. The set, costumes, humor, and superb acting all combine to capture the Elizabethan period so well it is difficult to distinguish between what is fact or fiction. However, Shakespeare was such a genius at his craft he probably wrote all his plays with little or no inspiration from his own experiences. Nevertheless it all makes for a good story.Loved it when it first came out and it was just as good this time around, if not better! The real reason for getting it out was for my 13 year old daughter to watch it as she has started to read Shakespeare... Read more
at school and I remember everything saying (including me!) how they wished they had seen this movie when THEY were at school as those plays would be a lot more relevant today. Well it's true and I utterly recommend getting out this DVD for anyone who is looking with horror at the Shakepeare play they have brought home from school!A wonderful tale of Shakespeare's genius which is funny and a feast for the eyes, with great script writing, and an awesome cast. The characters created by some extremely well known actors, are at times... Read more
surprising, and well worth watching. Highly recommended.Just an average movie. Good wet day viewing. definitely a girl flick
Will Shakespeare, were he to see it, would surely approve of this splendid Elizabethan romantic comedy. Joseph Fiennes is ideal as Shakespeare and Gwyneth Paltrow shines as Lady Viola. Other luminaries... Read more
in the cast include Judi Dench, Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Martin Clunes. The Elizabethan sets and costumes are superb. No wonder Shakespeare in Love won so many awards and rave reviews from critics. The wife loved it - I just didn't get it at all - a real girl flick. She would certainly watch it again, not one I would be recommending for any bloke to watch.
Great story, however, the usual love story antics and a bit soft at parts. But a great movie!
