This was one great movie, the acting was brilliant and the story line excellent, reminded me in a way of The secret Window. It was sometimes hard to sort what was real and what was imagined, but it... Read more
all came together, if you like a real mind bender this is it. Even the ending kept you guessing.

Exceptionally clever. You get drawn into the character's experience, start to feel what they feel, so that when you hit the twists you get really taken for the ride. Wonderfully put-together, perfectly... Read more
acted. One of those movies you're going to want to watch twice.

Gotta agree with Shay on this one. As a run of the mill psychological thriller it is pretty good I suppose. Doesn't drag - the predictable twist is even rendered quite effective somehow and it looks... Read more
real purdy. I guess we should be happy when director's make a film in a different style than usual but in this case it does seem like a step back for Marty. There seems to be no vision, no dizzying steadicam, no awesome soundtrack. It just seems startlingly unoriginal. It isn't really scary either but then I don't think it was supposed to be.

The cast and story won't let you down. Can't say too much - pay attention as it's not a no brainer. Great story well told. I went and sought out some of the writers other books.

A good movie but quite a dark story line, if you miss a moment it takes a while to catch up again.

With Shutter Island, the old master achieved something I never thought I'd say about a Scorsese film - he made it anonymous.
His previous most conventional thriller, Cape Fear, was a mainstream... Read more
genre film as well - from a narrative and plot point of view, even more conventional then Shutter Island - but it still had had visual flourishes and character driven subtext that were recognisably his. Even his great "failures" - Gangs of New York, for example - oozed visceral energy and sweaty obsessiveness, with bravura set pieces that had Scorsese's finger prints all over them.Shutter Island is uncharacteristically bland - maybe it's because Scorsese was the original film nerd director. When he first started out, it seemed fresh and daring. Now every self-defined auteur is another fanboy passing off self-concious homage and film-pop culture references as originality. Shutter Island feels like it could have been directed by any one of a number of directors working now who have some visual style and an encyclopedic knowledge of 20th century film. And as a muse, Leo is no young De Niro.
I suppose you could just enjoy Shutter Island for what it is - a skillfully made puzzle box, albeit an unavoidably disappointing one when the twist is revealed - but when it has Scorsese's name is attached you expect more, an emotional impact that you only get when a true master of his craft is on form. When Scorsese's on form it's like a gut punch, Shutter Island is full of movement but never really connects.

Absolutely loved it! But then I like most everything that Leo is in. He really took the role of Teddy Daniels and gave it his all. I have now bought the book, and can't wait to read it!

Great movie, like The Sixth Sense, needs to be watched again to see the clues missed.
