Being a huge fan of comics, and Frank Miller’s work especially, I was excited to see Robert Rodriguez was turning it into a film. I was less enthralled when I heard it was shooting it exactly as it looked in the comic. It seems nonsensical to me to film it the same as it looks on paper. If there is no difference from how it appeared originally, what is the point of filming it? But as most people probably haven’t read the comic, all this will be new to them. Visually, the film is quite new, with everything being filmed in front of blue screen, and then the sets and effects are added in later. This means the action flies around the screen, and really is like nothing seen on screen before. The film is most likely the most comic book-style movie ever seen on screen. But that is part of my problem. Film is a different medium from comics, and to just film it as it is written seems stupid. If we want to read the original, we can, and Rodriguez should have done something more to it. The film is also extremely violent, to the point that you will be amazed at how much cruelty the film gets away with. A shame then, that they didn’t stick to the nudity of the comic, as it seems childish to leave in the blood, but cut out the boobs. Mickey Rourke is the actor who is having the most fun, but I always get tired of ‘stunt casting’ in films, when it seems every actor is well known, and it pulls your focus out of the film. For people under 30 though, this will be the best film they have seen for years. For the rest, approach with care.
