I hate to rain on the parade, but this hugely popular and successful New Zealand comedy isn’t quite the five-star classic that most mainstream media have been raving about. Sure it gives the wedding genre a distinctly New Zealand -- or more specificially Samoan -- twist, but take away the cultural cloak, and it’s a film that has no real creative identity. It’s amiable and pleasant enough -- in the same manner as perhaps My Big Fat Greek Wedding, for example -- but also formulaic and predictable to a fault, with situations and characters that could’ve come from any number of Hollywood romantic comedies. As the commitment-phobic childhood buddies who have a knack for wreaking havoc on the weddings of their friends and family, Robbie Magavisa, Oscar Kightley, Iaheto Ah Hi and Shimpal Lelisi work well together, their likeably goofy camaraderie producing the film’s most amusing moments. But laughs are only intermittent, often walking the fine line between lampooning cultural stereotypes and perpetuating them. Chris Graham’s direction is competent if bland, jazzing up the sitcom-ness of the project with the occasional jump cut and freeze frame.
