When this film was released at the movies earlier in the year the film company didn’t let critics see it before they released it. This seemed strange to me as critics were always going to love a concept like this. Well, the film died a death at the box office in New Zealand, so now watch it at home and revel in this strange little flick. Filmed entirely in front of a blue screen (like a giant television screen painted blue), all the effects and sets for the film were animated and placed in later. This makes for a strange hybrid of real action and effects, but once the brain has time to adjust, the film looks great, if a little strange. So mainly the film is about the effects, but director Kerry Conran has got perfect performances out of Paltrow, Law, and Jolie that suit the film, but also seem very much from a 1930’s film, as in quite subtle and not modern at all. One of my favourite additions is Laurence Olivier as the villain. I have no idea how they stitched it all together, but he gives the best performance he has given in 20 years (ha ha), but it is another notable addition to a delightful film. Much was made before the film’s release about how it is a great tribute to old filmmakers, stories, etc. I still have no idea what they were talking about, and not getting these references did not diminish my enjoyment at all. So, a nice little throwback they can be enjoyed by all ages.
