After coming within one question of winning 20 million rupees on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" 18-year-old Mumbai "slumdog" Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is arrested on suspicion of cheating. While in custody, Jamal regales a jaded police inspector (Irrfan Khan) with remarkable tales of his life on the streets, as well as the story of Latika (Freida Pinto), the woman he loved and lost. Danny Boyle's film won all four Golden Globes for which it was nominated, including Best Picture (Drama).
Ghetto grit tarted up in MTV gloss, Danny Boyle’s Oscar sweeper Slumdog Millionaire is pretty much a Bollywood movie for people who don’t watch Bollywood movies. The plot, based on the novel Q & A by Indian writer Vikas Swarup, is an easy-sell no-brainer for big screen adaptation: 18-year-old former street urchin Jamal Malik (Dev Patel, from TV’s Skins) enters Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – only to surprise both host Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor) and the audience by practically slaying the game. Suspected of cheating, he’s brutally interrogated by the police. Skipping back and forth in time, the film unfolds with the events leading up to the game show, where Jamal has spent most of his youth homeless and on the run. The plot’s central idea is undeniably absurd – Jamal’s knowledge of the answers stems from key moments of his past – but the film sprints out of the gate with such kinetic vigour, like some sort of wild Dickensian Masala adventure, that it’s hard to resist its surface pleasures, at least for a while. But once you get over the novelty of the premise, it’s staggeringly ordinary stuff that loses momentum halfway through and resorts to recycling run-of-the-mill crime conventions.
One boys attempt to triumph against all the odds. No big stars in this film which was a big plus in its favour. I particularly liked the urban vistas depicting the expansive squalor of massed humanity. Definitely worth a look.
Lives up to it's reputation, I even managed to watch it twice. Has a compelling plot combined with well matched soundtrack...could even watch it again!
I know this won lots of Oscars but really not my kind of movie. Kind of depressing and could be upsetting to some. Saw this at the movies and 3 people walked out after 45mins. Mostly set in the slums... Read more
of India. Watching what happens to some of the children is hard to watch knowing how most of us live. Must say that it was a very unique movie/direction, can see how it won awards but not for me. Definately not a feel-good movie.
