Concluding the uncommonly consistent Robert Ludlum series with a strong, satisfying punch, The Bourne Ultimatum continues almost exactly where Supremacy ended, with amnesiac CIA-trained terminator Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) on the run. And he’s still pretty much on the run for the entirety of this film, globe-trotting through London, Madrid, Spain, Tangiers and back to New York on a mission to uncover his real identity. While the vigorous shaky-cam that director Paul Greengrass employed to startling effect in Supremacy is no longer surprising, Ultimatum still careens wildly all over the show with nailbiting, grab-you-by-the-lapels action setpieces. The topical urgency of the film is benefited by location shooting, and Greengrass fearlessly meets the simply insane logitistical demands of staging a car chase in the bustling traffic of downtown New York. The pay-off is a screeching vehicular blitzkreig that’ll have you unpicking your molars for bits of glass and twisted metal after you’ve reset your jaw.
