There are worlds beyond our own - the compass will show the way.
The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in a parallel world where people's souls manifest themselves as small animals, talking bears fight wars, and children are mysteriously disappearing. At the centre of the story is a 12-year-old girl, Lyra, who sets out to find and rescue her best friend, Roger, and ends up on an extraordinary quest to save not only her own world, but ours as well.

i dont knw how many times i rented this but never actgually got to watch it lol
This one is left wide open for a sequel which I am sure will be coming our way soon. It was great family viewing, a kids pic that the Mums and Dads can enjoy too.
Disappointing after reading the great novel it's based on. Too little detail and hard to follow plot.
I thought this was good for this genre of film. I liked Nichol Kidman as a baddy. It wasn't riveting, but watchable and I am looking forward to seeing the next installment
As an adult (although I often have doubts about myself on that score...), I found the plot a little too simplistic to hold my attention and often the animals were distractingly obvious as CGI. Also... Read more
, a couple of scenes had some violence at a level that surprised me, given that this movie is supposedly aimed at younger folk. However, on Blu-Ray, this is visually fantastic to look at and that alone kept me watching right to the end. There were several screen-width cityscape shots that were worth hitting the pause button to admire properly. Hearing Sir Ian McKellen as a violent, alcoholic polar bear made me laugh, as did seeing Sam Elliot being plonked into the story straight out of one his westerns - and giving him a jackrabbit was an especially satirical touch.
But at the end of it all, this is a kids' film and as such, they should enjoy it. Be warned, though, it's 'PG' rating should be taken seriously as just that, especially for kids under 13.
This Blu-ray has a fairly conventional storyline, with no real character complexity or development. In this regard it stands in sharp contrast with the Harry Potter stories, or the LION WITCH AND WARDROBE... Read more
. On the other hand the writer-director creates an alternate world that is just a little different from ours, but whose details are absolutely stunningly executed. The visuals are a delight from start to finish. There is an immersive depth to this world which is compellingly thorough and consistently thrilling. Despite the fairly shallow story, the viewer is very reluctant to leave such a dazzling alternate reality.I wasn't expecting too much from this film as I don't like Nicole Kidman much. But in the end I loved it! It was pretty to look at, the characters were lovely (and Nicole Kidman fantastic as a villain)... Read more

would have liked a bit more background at the start. The were some interesting ideas however and i liked the effects.Good moview with a solid story line. Characters were a good mix of good and evil and there were enough twists to keep it interesting. Safe for the kids to watch.
