2013 M Contains violence.

Eric Lomax was one of thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WWII. His experiences, after the secret radio he built to bring news and hope to his colleagues was discovered, left him traumatised and shut off from the world. Years later, he met Patti, a beautiful woman, on a train and fell in love.

Patti was determined to rid Eric of his demons. Discovering that the young Japanese officer who haunted her husband was still alive, she faced a terrible decision. Should Eric be given a chance to confront his tormentor? Would she stand by him, whatever he did?

Based on Eric Lomax’s best-selling memoir, The Railway Man is an extraordinary and inspiring true story of heroism, humanity and the redeeming power of love.

Really enjoyed this movie - quite slow to start with, but horrifying and tragic true story. Colin Firth great as usual, but did not recognise Nicole Kidman!

Absolutely loved this movie, and thought it definitely worth 5 stars. Made more compelling by the fact it is a true story, this film is both very harrowing and moving! Last week I saw the movie "Unbroken"... Read more

Although quite shocking in some parts, I loved this movie. Excellent acting. I'm not usually a fan of Nicole Kidman's but thought she was superb in this.

Very enjoyable. Terrible subject matter, but very well made movie. The horrible truths of war came out with incredible accuracy. Kidman did a great job, at possibly her most un-Kidman-like. Firth excellent.

Harrowing account of how the Japanese tortured British prisoners of war, and forced them into slave labour building a railway. The railway and camp can be visited today. The Japanese have never admitted to these atrocities nor apologised.

The first half - particularly the props - is very good but the story weakens out in the latter half.
