Really enjoyed this movie - quite slow to start with, but horrifying and tragic true story. Colin Firth great as usual, but did not recognise Nicole Kidman!
Absolutely loved this movie, and thought it definitely worth 5 stars. Made more compelling by the fact it is a true story, this film is both very harrowing and moving! Last week I saw the movie "Unbroken"... Read more and thought that nothing could top that. Then I watched this one (which is very similar in that it deals with a prisoner in a WWII Japanese POW camp) and found this to be far superior. Some of the scenes are pretty horrific and had me cringing. But the ending....well that just made the whole thing totally worth it! I loved it so much, I went out and purchased my own copy the same day I watched this.
Although quite shocking in some parts, I loved this movie. Excellent acting. I'm not usually a fan of Nicole Kidman's but thought she was superb in this.
Great true story with a terrible but interesting storyline
Very enjoyable. Terrible subject matter, but very well made movie. The horrible truths of war came out with incredible accuracy. Kidman did a great job, at possibly her most un-Kidman-like. Firth excellent.
Enjoyed this movie, great acting, interesting but very sad story, well worth a watch.
Wonderful gripping movie. Great acting by Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. Based on true story which makes it even more harrowing. We watched this movie three times, not a usual thing for us. Would... Read more recommend this movie to anyone interested in human psychology and history.
good movie interesting story another great Colin Firth movie
Harrowing account of how the Japanese tortured British prisoners of war, and forced them into slave labour building a railway. The railway and camp can be visited today. The Japanese have never admitted to these atrocities nor apologised.
The first half - particularly the props - is very good but the story weakens out in the latter half.
