Twisted, brutal, ugly, beautiful, excruciating. DDL's performance headbutts you in the face & smells like a bear. Massive supporting roles, visceral plot, striking visuals & sinuous, arse-biting irony... Read more

Shows how consuming quest for wealth and power can be though to even break family ties towards the end of his life in the pursuit of his dream seems a bit far-fetched.

I just couldn't handle this movie any longer and ended up turning it off towards the end which I have maybe only done once before in a movie. There was so much promise to the movie as Daniel Day Lewis... Read more
was fantastic in it but unfortuantely the huge silent parts when no one spoke and the terrible music they used made it a hard movie to watch. I think the movie was trying to be 'different' and might've succeeded if not for the music and silience that was just too long in parts. I really struggled holding out until the end. Was a shame as I thought Daniel was fantastic.

A mammoth acting effort by Daniel Day Lewis - it's like he saves up all his acting prowess and makes one really good film every five years.

ever experienced though. The first twenty minutes is like listening to someone drag their nails down a blackboard and then just when you think you can bear no more, a crying baby is thrown in. This is all done to increase the drama of the scenes, but instead it exceeds the tension of the scenes. I used the mute button to get rid of the sounds - there is no dialogue to miss - and there was very little tension or suspense, at all. Toward the end there is some novelist style whining about religion and I fail to see how it would matter to the kind of man Mr. Plainview was - unless he was stupidly drunk, which he was. Could have been done better.
The rest of the story will continue to hold your attention from start to finish.

Definitely up there with the worst movie I have ever watched. Totally depressing! As for the music I struggled completely with that tragic sound! And the ending just finished the deal as worst movie on record!!!!

Psycho music which actually fits the film well. Great acting, not only from DDL. Ouite a heavy movie. It keeps you spellbound till the end if you can stomach the rawness.

I think it is very, very authentic. DDL plays a sensitive person in a very tough world. The character is very like my grandfather and I can understand why the man behaved the way he did. The movie is... Read more
gripping and excellent in all regards. I warn that the movie depicts great brutality and has a gruesome ending.
