Can those wizards at Pixar do no wrong? Their 10th feature Up is another characteristically dazzling winner, even though it may not top their back-to-back wonders Ratatouille and Wall-E. By far their most dramatically sophisticated film yet, the story follows cranky 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) who embarks on a search for a lost world and explorer by airlifting his house with balloons. But any chance of a quiet solo journey is dashed when he discovers chubby and eager 8-year-old boy scout Russell (Jordan Nagai) has accidentally come aboard too. Up is another enchanting work that delights in their trademark blend of action, comedy and emotion while venturing into some brave, “adult” territory. Notably, the ten-minute segment illustrating the first two-thirds of Carl’s life is a staggering, enormously moving achievement that tackles challenging themes such as miscarriage and death with grace and empathy. The ensuing action is the kind of brisk, funny, detail-and-thrill-packed magic Pixar do so well, and smartly staged by director Pete Docter (Monsters Inc.) with a sly nod to pulpy 1940s serials. One of 2009’s best films.
